Midlife Fairy Hunter (Forty Proof #2)

Published April 23rd 2020 by Hijinks Ink Publishing, Kindle Edition 352 pages

A Paranormal Women’s Fiction with a bit of class, and a lot of sass for anyone over forty!

Over the hill, all outta ducks to give, and suddenly life is looking up . . .even if you’re living with a ghost and fighting off werewolves.

Moving back to Savannah changed my life in all the best ways. New job. New friends. As far from my ex-husband as possible.

I didn’t count on the Shadow World intensifying its hold on my life.

Color me surprised, when a new job lands in my lap watching over a fairy ring. Worth ten times what I’d make anywhere else, it seems too good to be true. I take it anyway.

And that’s when things get weird.

Spells are cast on my friends that seems to make them lose their marbles.

I’ve got a Bigfoot baking in my kitchen.

And a skeleton is quickly becoming my go-to guy. Which is silly because the eye candy strutting around in front of me is drool worthy. (I’m looking at you, Crash. Really looking 0_0)

Nothing in Savannah is what it seems, and the magic and undercurrents of this city are pulling me onto a dangerous path.

But with a Fae Queen begging my help, and the darkness closing in, I can only do one thing.

Pop a couple Advil, and kick some serious ducking butt.

This series is going to be one of those that just get better and better even though the first book was amazing to start with!

Midlife Fairy Hunter continues the journey with Breena discovering new 'things' as well as being chased by other 'things'. I love the tension that is building up between her and Crash and me (ha!)!!! He is my ultimate dream for a character in a book like this!!

I adore this storyline, I love where the book takes us and I love how Shannon Mayer portrays her characters with vivid life like qualities.

I am lucky to be reading these books at this point because book 3 is only a matter of weeks away. These first two have been on Kindle Unlimited (UK), if book 3 needs to be purchased, I definitely will be buying!

I'm giving this one a reluctant 4 stars.

I like Breena for the most part, even though in this book she got a bit repetitive with her preaching, making her seem a bit pretentious. And I really like her friends - Robert, Feish, Suzy was fun.

I really dislike the Hollows Group. I frankly think they're worthless - this is the second book where she's needed to save their asses, but they still treat her like garbage. And honestly, nothing makes up for the shitty way they have treated her. I will never like Corb - never - because of how he treated her in book 1. So I am just absolutely not here for him as possible love interest.

I really dislike the way she allows her ex to still treat her as a doormat. In this book, after taking nearly everything from her, he comes back and tries to take more. She catches him, and rather than a host of good responses - calling the police (since she caught him breaking in and stealing her shit), or just fucking beating his ass - she just gives him a stern talking to and lets him leave. Are you kidding me with that? This doesn't make her look like a strong female lead. It makes her looks like a spineless moron who is still letting her ex get away with treating her like shit. It undercuts her character badly.

Her character is also badly undercut by even being interested in Corb, who treated her like complete shit from beginning to end of book 1. Seriously, just no.

I like Crash. I like Gran. I like the mystery unfolding about who/what Breena is. I like the idea of this series - the world it creates, and the complicated natures of fae. Big points in this book for Karissa. So ... I'm giving it 4 and going forward, with some concerns.

This series is so good as a bit of light UF relief. Bree has now got a team around her and is coming into her own. These stories are action packed and fast paced- just what the doctor ordered.

Wow! So many twists!

I love this book series! I love Corb but I I liked how the twists and mysteries turned out. I can't wait to see what happens next with Breena & friends! I love Robert! His character is heartwarming even if he is only able to say one special word most of the time.

On the precipice of being great, but falls short.

Breena O'Riley is a forty-year old recent divorcee returned back to her home-town when her latent supernatural abilities appear. She's older than her peers and it affects her physically; her knees creak, she can't run as fast, and her body is not what is what comes up when you google: sexy woman. All of these characteristics make her endearing, however, it quickly becomes clear that Breena is insecure. I can tolerate only so much, and slut-shaming and bashing women because of their youth, perky boobs and apparent lack of wrinkles and is not it for me. It's distasteful, unnecessary and doesn't add anything to Breena's character, except make me dislike her.

Another criticism I have is the author's inability to type out swear words in the book. I thought that characters were actually saying 'duck' and 'ducking', until the tail-end of the book when I realized it was a placeholder for the word "fuck", when Breena mentally states that a character dropped an f-bomb while the character in dialogue said, 'duck'. If you're having your characters swear, you can type it out, it's not sacrilegious to do so.

That said I did enjoy Midlife Bounty Hunter, it did take haranguing to get through the beginning, but I was glad I stood by it. It picks up after the last book quite well, especially in the second half, upping the ante in terms of the mysterious entities trying to ruin Savannah, and provides us with a little, and I do mean this literally, little insight into who and what Breena is.

However, will I be continuing this series? That is yet to be seen.

Actual stars 3.5. The "duck" annoys me. The older you get the less filters you have in some things and this is one.

What can I say?

This one's a tale of mystery full of plot twists you'll probably never see coming.
It features a 40 something woman with a broken filter who was done caring what everyone else thought,
an animated skeleton and an undead horse, who happen to be among my favourites,
A more or less stupid werewolf who got his tail in a twist,
And giant spider reading and editing books, among others, - How that works you're gonna have to read this to find out. :D

A determined woman fighting with everything she's got to help those she loves with a lot of classy snark and sass.

Love this series

This series is amazing. Bree is the perfect fMC for me, as it's nice to see someone who knows what she wants because of her life experiences so far. That maturity just makes her relatable

This series just keeps getting better. I love everything about this book from the plotting and pacing to the character development and romantic tension. The expanding group of sidekicks is wonderful and never detracts from the main arc.

Everything I needed and more

This book was awesome. It was a adrenaline rush. I was waiting for the end to smack me. It did. I felt the ending all the way to my bones. I can't wait for more of this story. The new twist is going to be interesting to see play out. I also love the different people that are going to make up this group of friends. Well done

A great second instalment to this series! I'm really liking this and cant wait to see where it goes. I was too caught up in the excitement of the last one to see any faults, but this time round, my eyes are wide open. It's less that the things are bad, it's just that I would like better. I just want some more background on a lot of the characters, or at least more interactions. We've met so many people and yet I know nothing beyond the names of them. I'm still very happy though.

Midlife Fairy 🧚‍♀️ Hunter

This second book in the Forty-Proof series starts five days after book one, and though you don’t have to have read that, it enriches this one if you have.

Breena is a middle aged misfit, recently moved to her hometown of Savannah after twenty years, to try and get back her dead granny’s house that her ex husband stole from her whilst Bree was incarcerated in a mental health institute he’d put her in - because she could see things that don’t exist - according to ‘Himself’. The ex.

He gaslighted her, emotionally abused her and still won’t let her live life now they’re divorced. And to be honest he’s a weakly weasle of a man with a superiority complex - don’t worry, he’ll get his ‘reward’ as due.

There’s magic in Savannah and Bree now believes in it.

She’s smart, can fight, tell off werewolves and is not afraid to own her mature, burgeoning hormones and man-crushes.

Add in the fact she is a kick-ass, snarky forty-plus woman with curves and baggage - who adopts people wherever she goes - it’s a very fun read. And I love that #PWF is a new emerging sub genre - about time too.
I can also relate to the hot flashes.

Holy Hell this was fab and I know some future bad guys I think; enough bread crumbs and red herrings left scattered to form book three.

So many things were answered in this one; why Crash * a very hot, dubious smith * is, well, complicated, the why of Sarge’s aggression, the importance of the house and - what you really do with boy butter.
Those scenes. OMG I laughed so hard at this.
To top it off, the ‘supporting cast’ includes her ex’s cousin Corb, ridiculously hot and young, a water maid Feish, who looks more than a bit like a fish, Eric the gentle shapeshifter’Bigfoot’ who bakes and gardens, and a wobbly dead skeleton called Robert, and this ensemble rocks.
There’s plenty of tension, action, emotion, laughter and surprises to be had.
I absolutely loved this.
Now go buy it.

There are so many things to love about this book and series so far; a kick butt heroine who is FINALLY coming into her own, the shadow world that is seeping through Savannah, the adult situations (talking bills and danger here), not to mention the aches and pains that go along with aging.... it's a fine wine of a book I want to savor.

The maturity shown by Breena deftly sidesteps the plot holes and devices so many books in this genre employ. Seriously, this woman knows who she is, what she can bring to the table and how to look beyond the obvious. What she doesn't know? Her worth. Her true talents. Or why anyone would want her. In other words, she is a normal, modern woman, riddled with strength and insecurities - and it's wonderful to see. I really like her, I am enjoying her journey and I can't wait to see where she goes from here, and how Savannah has to change to accommodate the newest Guardian.

What I did NOT like however? The constant and incessant naysaying against aging. Yes, she's 41. We get it. She hurts. Her back is sore. She has fine lines and maybe a few gray hairs. But, and here's the thing - she is ONLY 41! That is not dead, and it's not unattractive. I kept getting annoyed at the sheer number of people that mentioned her age or how many times she thought about it or put herself down for it. Maybe it's because of the situation that she finds herself in, fighting with those much younger that she, but I'm 40, and I don't spend my days lamenting my aging. Mind you, this book has a bit less of it than Book 1 - and more people around Breena are starting to see her worth. I expect that Book 3 will continue this trend.

All in all, this is a fantastic book and worth reading.
