Rage and Ruin (The Harbinger #2)

Published June 9th 2020 by Inkyard Press, Kindle Edition 468 pages

Dangerous secrets and forbidden desires lead to shocking consequences…

Half-angel Trinity and her bonded gargoyle protector, Zayne, have been working with demons to stop the apocalypse while avoiding falling in love. The Harbinger is coming…but who or what is it? All of humankind may fall if Trinity and Zayne can’t win the race against time as dark forces gather.

As tensions rise, they must stay close together and patrol the DC streets at night, seeking signs of the Harbinger, an entity that is killing Wardens and demons with no seeming rhyme or reason. Forbidden to be with each other, Zayne and Trinity fight their feelings and turn to unusual sources for help—the demon Roth and his cohorts. But as deaths pile up and they uncover a sinister plot involving the local high school and endangering someone dear to Zayne, Trin realizes she is being led…herded…played for some unknown end. As anger builds and feelings spiral out of control, it becomes clear that rage may be the ruin of them all.

The ending left me speechless, like the snap of Thanos’ gauntlet-clad fingers kind of speechless . . .

The pop culture references in this book is insane. Can you imagine having a conversation with a demon about BTS? Nobody can pull off that kind of ridiculous but clever and highly entertaining humor, except JLA.

When I was reading this, plot wise, it reminded me so much of the shows Supernatural and Shadowhunters. Another rehashed idea, yet somehow the author’s made it work. The pacing is slow, but there’s a lot of action and I loved that.

Unfortunately, I was rather dispassionate about the romance. It was meh, and I wasn’t feeling it. Trinity really got under my skin with her jealousy and insecurities. I was defensive of Zayne, but I thought he was understanding and honest. I did not appreciate how she treated him.

ROTH STOLE THE SPOTLIGHT IN THIS BOOK!!!

How is it that I cared more about him, Layla, and Cayman than the main characters? Zayne and Trinity are a badass team, but those three light up any situation with their hilarity. I have a sudden urge to reread The Dark Elements series, but I also can’t wait to have the third book in my hands!

i read this book for zayne and zayne alone. and all i can say is HOW DARE YOU END A BOOK LIKE THAT, JLA!!!

i dont think i enjoyed this as much as the first book and that could be for several reasons - too much time between books, so i forgot a lot. the pacing is slow. not a fan of the many pop culture references. and trinity is so annoying/immature and i hated how she treated zayne.

that being said, i loved the further world-building in this. its so interesting learning more about the angels and their dynamic with demons and ghosts. i also found the complex emotions in this to very insightful - especially for zayne. the poor boy has been through much and its so natural for the reader to understand his struggles and empathise with him.

overall, this is exactly what i expected this new installment to be. that ending basically destroyed me, so i will tending my wounded heart until the next book comes out.

My God!! I forgot how much I love Gargoyles! Of course, I do have statues around my room, but I digress!

Okay, so the Zayne in the book has long blonde hair, but this is my Zayne.

I love the hell out of these characters! And in no way shape or form did I see that ending coming!! Although, I do always wonder why this one person ends up a bad guy in some books and movies πŸ€”

Anyhoo, I really looking forward to the next book!! Damn it!!

Jennifer L. Armentrout can do no wrong. Let's just put that out there for all to know.

Even when she writes books that aren't my cup of tea, and it has happened before, I still keep running back, and 9 times out of 10, she delivers and I love her so much for it!

Also, just so this can be out there for all to acknowledge and be awed, by the end of 2020, JLA would have published THREE novels in the year alone! Each of them being 500+ pages! And from what I can tell (I've not read the rest but have seen reviews) all of them are top-notch quality. That is all kinds of wild! How does she have the time? The motivation? I will forever be impressed by her!

But, moving on, you're here for a review, not a fangirl freak out.

As always, my favorite part of any JLA novel is the characters. Her characters are such fun, likable people. There is something about them that feels real and like people that you would actually like to know in real life. And they have such great dialogue which always makes me smile. Even the villains, the worst of the worst are entertaining.

I loved seeing all the character interactions, and I now really want to read the companion series, The Dark Elements trilogy (although that is in no way needed to understand this story) just to get more interactions between the side characters. Roth, Layla, and Cayman great to read about.

The main characters, Trin and Zayne were equally entertaining. I laughed too many times while reading their conversations. I love the chemistry between the two, and just how well they get along. I also loved seeing the progression of  Trin's impending blindness and how the disability played a role in the story and in Trin's life without it fundamentally changing who she was as a person. It's rare to see the main character in a story like this with a disability that plays so much into the story. It was great to see how well it was done here since the author shares the same blindness causing genetic disorder as the main character.

One of my complaints from the last book was that it felt too long it was 500+ pages and I didn't feel that it needed to be. While this book is just as physically long, I never noticed the time pass by. The pacing was so good, it never dragged and generally flowed smoothly.  Another previous complaint was that I could see just about everything coming in Storm and Fury. This book, on the other hand, kept catching me by surprise, down to the very last sentence.

Overall, I totally recommend this series. If you like fun characters and action, this is for you! Especially if you are already familiar with Jennifer L. Armentrout's style of writing!!

**I received an advance copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All opinions are my own.**

Star Rating: —> 5 MILLION,BILLION, TRILLION STARS!
(Technically 5, but the rating system is SO limited; bah, semantics)

AHHHHH! This was one of my absolute top favorite reads of the year, I am shaking, literally... i’m crying, no, sobbing. I can’t get over how insane this was... an emotional rollercoaster ride that I waited a year for and is over ALREADY & I’m going to have to wait againnnn for most likely around a year to get to read the last book in the trilogy! I had to have written a short review for this 3 times (all after 3 in the morn of course), and fell asleep each and every time before i could post it. i am beyond enthusiastic about this book, you have no idea, and everyone needs to read this series, BUT I’m absolutely exhausted and feeling quite defeated over the whole deleted-review-3-times deal so a more inclusive RTC!

(Seriously though! You NEED to get your hands on this RIGHTNOW!)

Okay seriously... 3.5 MORE DAYS!!!! Flipping my shit rn!
Ahhh my darling JLA!

BTW I MUST thank @jessica for introducing me to her brilliance a year ago! ❀️

Let me start by saying how much I love this series!!!! Damn Jennifer Armentrout for writing another series that puts my stomach in knots and gets my heart racing and gets my girl parts a humming!!! I've always loved gargoyles since I was little and her Wardens like Zayne are sexy hot and magnificent!!! And our heroine Trinity wonder girl with super powers who's half angel and half human and who despite having a eye disease that will probably leave her blind hasn't stopped her from being a bad ass chick with so much heart who is willing to find and stop the harbinger before he brings forth the apocalypse. So much has been already said about this book so I won't go on about the plot. But i will say I love the characters so friggin much besides zayne and trinity theirs demon crown prince of hell and all around trouble maker and fabulous with the one liners the sexy and dark Roth!!! This guy is too much and I adore him and his familiar bambi ! So glad their a team again! I also love me some Cayman as well! The heat and steam in this book was hotttt! And trin and zayne's banter on point! We finally found out who the harbinger is and it shocked the shit out of me! God hasn't been paying attention and one of his archangels is tried of humans and is about to change the world. Full of bitterness and hate for the human race he wants to take away the gift of eternity! And he will use trinity's trueborn blood along with his own to usher in the Transfiguration by opening a rift between heaven and earth so the evil souls enter heaven and once heaven closes it doors to protect the innocent, then every human who dies will no longer be able to enter heaven and will be left on earth for evil to use! So many twists and turns and a ending that had me balling my fucking eyes out!!! I closed and opened the book and read the ending three times hoping I didn't just read what I thought I read! But theirs hope, but what will be the price and is their a happy ending or more heartache to come? I guess we will find out more when book 3 Grace and Glory comes out in June!!!! Until next time Luv'sπŸ’•πŸ’‹

The heroine: Trinity - the daughter of an Archangel, Trinity has finally been called upon by her father to fulfill her life’s purpose. Along with her warden guardian she is searching for something called the Harbinger that has been killing wardens (Gargoyles) and demons alike

The Hero(es): Zayne - he is a warden that looks at things a bit differently than most. He works with demons and doesn’t indiscriminately kill demons like the rest of the wardens. This has alienated him from his clan.

The Story: Trinity and Zayne become much closer after her father appoints Zayne her guardian. They are forbidden to be together now that Zayne is her guardian. It doesn’t dampen the attraction they have felt toward each other.

This storyline has gotten better and better. I am enthralled with this world and can’t wait to hear more. The narration was great again, I like the young woman who is doing the narration and she is Trinity to me, not just someone reading the words. She is good a putting emotion into her voice as well as wit and sarcastic humor.

My favorite person was her ghost friend Peanut again but the rest of the supporting cast is gaining ground as well. I really like Roth, the crown prince of Hell and the two main characters are fascinating and they have all the chemistry you could ask for.

Another great thing is all the pop culture references, like Supernatural, Star Wars, Dr. Who and time they compare themselves to the Avengers.

Roth: "What about you, Zayne? Would you kill baby Harbinger?"
"Yes. I would. Now that we've all agreed that we'd kill baby Harbinger, can we get a move on?"
"Sure. I don't know about you guys, but this sharing and caring moment makes me feel like we're a real team that can get stuff done. Like the Avengers, but more evil."
"So, pretty much like Tony Stark?"
"Tony Stark is not evil!"

First Reread (June 19 2021): I totally forgot about that ending. I swear I will dropkick someone if things don't start looking hopeful for Trinity and Zayne. I'm glad I have Grace And Glory on deck. This author. I've said it before and I'll say it again the hell she puts her characters through would be impressive if it didn’t hurt so goddamn much. Fingers crossed for an amazing last book in the series 😭

What a rollercoaster of emotions! This is the first book that's made me tear up this year. I need the next book in this series as soon as humanly possible! There were so many highs and lows and even more wrench-your-heart-out lows.

Trinity has a good head on her shoulders. She tries her best to be self-sufficient and strong but knows when to ask for help. I appreciate her wanting to resolve the conflict that came up between her and Zayne like rational human beings by using their words. She's very mature and I love that.

Zayne went from sweet to a slight douche bag and right back to sweet and understanding. My heart didn't know what to believe in this novel. It hurt to experience all their ups and downs when I just wanted to hug them and tell them they would be okay.

One of the best parts of this book turned out to be Roth! I love his witty banter with Trin. I really enjoy him as a character. This book really convinced me that I never had a problem with Roth. I just really disliked having to be in Layla's head all that time.

The biggest twist at the end had me tearing up. I was going to flat out refuse to believe that I had read that part in the first place. I was going to metaphorically burn these books out of my mind if the author had gone along with it. On that note, I'm SO SO SO glad she didn't! I want to know what happens next!

The Audio Book:

The narrator was amazing! All the characters were distinguishable from each other. There were no strange noises in the background to distract from the story.

End of book 2, and I am starting to wish the series could drag on a little longer; that's how much I am enjoying it. I wanted more Zayne and Trin, and I got it.
In the first book, they didn't know who the Harbinger, their enemy was. The reveal in this book showed how big and close to impossible it will be to defeat him.
Of course, it ended with a cliffhanger, which means I can't wait to see how it's all going to end. JLA, you are my new favourite author, neck-and-neck with Laura Thallasa, until I find another book, of course.
My rating, five bright stars 🌟 🌟🌟🌟🌟!!!
