One Room Angel

Published May 25th 2020 by Boy’s Love (first published March 25th 2019), Mass Market Paperback 180 pages

"There are a lot of things that Kouki doesn’t have – no hobbies, no friends, no lover, no stable job, and no will to live. So when a random tussle with some kids gets him stabbed, he thinks maybe this is finally his ticket out of this crappy life. But just as he’s about to pass out he sees a beautiful “angel”… How is Kouki supposed to cope when less than a month later, he’s mysteriously healed, has astronomical bills to pay, and suddenly has the same beautiful angel as his amnesiac roommate?"

So unlike Harada's past work but still deals with heavy themes like in her serialized work. a story about grief, depression, second chances and finding joy in life. It's so bittersweet it made me emotional. Good stuff.

It is a pretty sad story about a middle age ex gangster Kouki who was recently unemployed (pretty much his employer was an old jackass), hasn’t much friends and all of the things he needs. He then meets a middle school guy who is an angel but has a extremely sad reason on why he’s an angel (not spoiling it for y’all). The ending really was a punch in the head so yeah get tissues and be prepared for a depressing story is all I can say dudes…..

I am not crying.
You are.

I cried so much reading this.

(also completely ignored the romance bit cuz the age gap was disturbing and throughout the story it was more of a father-son energy)

One of my all time favorite one shots! I‘ve cried my eyeballs out and still wanted to reread it again and again. Harada‘s works are quite controversial but this one is safe to read (just be prepared to cry. A LOT.)

Malancholic yet hopeful. I'm used to Harada's psychological fuckery and depraved kinks that constantly make me question my life choices because more often than not, I'm hella into them. 💀 So this one was quite refreshing in the sense that it's tame in the Harada scale, has an adorable af angel, and involves no sexual themes, as what I have come to expect from their works.

This fell short in impacting me emotionally but I still enjoyed it. That extra chapter was precious af. Would recommend to BL readers, especially to those that binged all of Harada's fucked up stuff and would like some type of palate cleanser.

Having said that, this still contains triggering themes, so proceed with caution.

CWs: depression, suicide, incited suicide, suicidal thoughts, death

I absolutely ADORED this. I wasn't expecting this from Harada. It's so much different from other works I've read from them. I certainly wasn't expecting to be in tears by the end of it. I feel like the twist is pretty predictable, but oh my god the ending still hits. I really loved Kouki and Angel's friendship. I liked seeing Kouki's view on life change as he slowly picked himself up. And the angel was so adorable. I honestly don't want to say much, because this is better to just experience on your own. Highly recommend~
