....why...and what happened?!

That's what I am currently feeling right now. After a fantastic volume 9 with considerable plot progression and character development, we get this volume.

I was not impressed with volume 10. I felt like Kousuke and Masahiro's plot fell short, as if the author doesn't know where to take their story now that volume 9 wrapped up quite a bit of the drama. Finally, Kousuke and Masahiro are living together, granted for a short period. Yet their story didn't progress beyond the fact that Masahiro is lonely and isn't used to not being surrounded by his friends and family. I don't understand why they wouldn't have the friends come over to the apartment to avoid this problem in the first place.

We did get quite a bit more about Kensuke and Hasekura's relationship, which I am grateful for. Yet, here is my tiff, if you wanted to focus so much on Kensuke and Hasekura, why not just continue creating volumes of Hitorijime My Boyfriend? It's not that I don't like seeing their romance grow, but isn't the whole point of this spin-off to focus on Kousuke and Masahiro?

I don't mind focusing on side characters once in a while, especially Yuge and Natsuo, who I am most interested in seeing develop into a relationship. However, when the volumes start to focus more on side characters and less on who the story is supposed to be about, to me, it signals not enough material on the main characters. So then why continue creating volumes focusing on them? The further we go into these volumes, the less we are given of Masahiro and Kousuke. This volume and quite a few others portray this when they only feature them part to half the time.

This series blows me away with how sweet it is. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the concept might be problematic, but the content is really wholesome.

Warning: Spoilers for Volume 9

Volume 9 of Hitorijime My Hero was GREAT. There was closure to Onda's plans to sabotage Kousuke and Masahiro's relationship (complete with a fist fight and a ridiculously dangerous spider-man stunt), we learned more about Kousuke's high school days, Kousuke and Masahiro finally moved in together, groundwork was laid for the possibility of a new romance for Yuge, and there was finally some forward movement in Hasekura's relationship with Kensuke. That was a lot of stuff and I remember feeling the same way I feel after watching a well written season finale of a show that I'm crazy about. I felt a sense of closure as well as excitement about what was coming next.

Volume 10, understandably, doesn't have this same impact, but it was still very good. We get to see how Kensuke is handling all of his new feelings toward Hasekura and how Masahiro is adjusting to living in his new apartment with a barely present Kousuke. While I enjoyed watching Kensuke and Hasekura's cute reactions to each other, I thought the story involving Masahiro and Kousuke was just meh. Kousuke has Masahiro to himself now so he's going to have to figure out a way to keep him from feeling lonely. He's used to be surrounded by all his friends, not coming home to an empty apartment. I wonder if Kousuke would be okay with them coming over to their apartment sometimes. I'm eager to see what the author will come up with next to keep their story interesting. I'm also looking forward to seeing some headway in Yuge and Natsuo's relationship.

I’m really glad we got some more development to ken and hasekuras relationship. I know they are more of like a slow burn due to how ken handles things but it was so nice to see that slight change in how they are together. It was a nice change of pace from the constant of our main characters. Not that I dislike them but I definitely like our side characters as well so seeing things from them is nice. Also when are we going to see the dad?!?!? I feel like this is the 2nd/3rd one they’ve hinted at him coming back and I want all the drama that comes with that like now lol.

Great volume with development with Hasekura and Ken. Doesn’t feel forced now. The downside is Kodansha needs to check their translation. There were bubbles literally filled with nonsense.

This volume was sweet and wholesome and all about the building relationships between the two main couples. Plus it helped cheer me up during a few very bad days.
