This is just okay. It is jam-packed full of recipes, but they don't all have pictures, which I consider negative. They are organized well and pretty easy to make, they just didn't do it for me! Taste of Home has a website with recipes that is searchable and also offers ratings, so I would find that MUCH more valuable than this cookbook.

Having good and tasty recipes. Good for food lovers

I used to subscribe to this magazine, and bought a few of their cookbooks. I love comfort food a lot. I have moved away from most of the recipes, because I don't use canned soups etc. There are some true "from scratch" recipes to be found, but I gravitate more towards Fine Cooking or Cook's Illustrated these days. Great beginner level recipes, though.

I learned long ago that anything associated with "The Taste of Home" magazine would be delightful and delicious. I was given this terrific cookbook by a friend who knows how much I love to cook and read cookbooks. "The Taste of Home Cookbook: Timeless Recipes From Trusted Home Cooks" is a beautifully packaged, wonderfully detailed and rich resource for both kitchen novices and well-seasoned cooks. The first chapter, "Kitchen Basics", is like a cooking class, loaded with information and easy and helpful guidelines to use in your own kitchen. Tools, techniques, terms, tips & tidbits galore! This cookbook is very complete, not only offering scrumptious recipes, but also cooking and serving suggestions for each type of food. The bright and colorful photographs are plentiful and encourage you to try the recipes--they also tempt you to eat the pages right out of the book! This is a big book, but the ring binder format lays flat, and the pages stay open where you leave them. This is a book which you will open again and again, not just to hunt down a recipe, but for the simple enjoyment of discovering all the tasty treasures between the covers. You will never wonder: "What can I fix for dinner?". The answer will be right at your fingertips with this book. In addition to the cookbook itself, there is an amazing CD included: "Celebrations: 473 delicious recipes and dozens of ideas for year-round entertaining." Now, this is the kind of CD that foodies can truly enjoy! Sit back and relax with a cup of good coffee (and a plate of brownies--see "Super Brownies" on page 570 of the book). If you love to cook, or just love to look, the book and the CD will satistfy your culinary cravings.

I love this cookbook. It is one that I have had for awhile now and I constantly check it for recipes. Taste of Home offers some great recipes for all kinds of palettes. The spiral bound in the book is fantastic. It makes it so easy to use.

I made a pear bread out of this book, and was not impressed. I will continue to try other recipes, but will trust my instincts, which said it needed more flavor and that the pans were too full!

The Taste of Home cookbook: cooks who care edition is a thorough book that contains a large amount of reference information, including diagrams of the various cuts from beef, lamb, pork, etc. It seems to be a guide for those who love to make items from scratch and the cooks using it will need to be sure they have sufficient prep and cooking time. One nice feature of the book is that for certain holidays or celebrations, a complete suggested menu is provided from its contents. I did find a few referenced recipes, such as a baked western omelet or a stuffed cabbage casserole for the crock pot to be unique. Nevertheless, experienced or inexperienced cooks will soon find themselves at the brink of being known as chefs.

Do not try the turkey pot pie! I’m docking an entire star for that recipe alone. (Ugh—ground turkey, frozen mixed vegetables. I should have known better …)
Do try the braised chicken with vegetables—that’s the entrée recipe I go back to the most often from this cookbook, and it always turns out very well.

I decided to put cookbooks on my list because I think it's one of the harder things to get recommendations for - plus, I love to cook - so would encourage my other friends to do the same.
Taste of Home is actually a magazine where readers send in their recipes, which are then judged, and the best ones are printed up and shipped out. The cookbook is a collection of both the basic recipes everyone needs (i.e. hard-boiled egg, mashed potatoes, etc.) and then the super delicious home-formulated recipes from the magazine. There is a section of the book called "Light and Tasty", which I believe is from the low-cal version of the Taste of Home magazine called "Light and Tasty" but it's only a small section compared to the rest of the book. This is GREAT for entertaining and contains the best recipe for cranberry scones I've ever used. I also like that the recipes are organized by ingredient, alphabetically (i.e. in the vegetable section, recipes featuring brussel sprouts are before recipes featuring carrots). HIGHLY recommended for hard-core cookers who like to impress people with their culinary skills. A lot of the recipes are also fairly easy to make and there aren't many with too exotic ingredients.

This actually isn't a review of the cookbook, though I'm sure it's a good one.
I love the Taste of Home family of magazines and just discovered our library has them. I'm going to use this entry to keep track of the ones I've read (and subscribed to) so far. If you enjoy cooking and trying new recipes, you need to read these magazines - great resource.

Excellent cookbook for the intermediate learner--those looking to build their home kitchen and start substitutions in a pinch. An especially helpful resource for me was the explanation of each ingredient in a basic bread recipe--what each ingredient does and why it's important.
Inside front cover has amount conversions--how many graham crackers to a half cup, for example; inside back cover has basic substitutions.
Easy recipes that aren't bland, dull, or too simple to inspire. A great start for anyone looking to cook at home.
