Theodore Gale in Oz (Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 5)

, Audiobook

A genderbent reimagining of the classic fairytale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz…

Theodore Gale is a twenty-five-year-old, unemployed, playboy cowboy with the propensity for getting into fights. After winning a bronco riding competition he decides to celebrate with a southern belle he sneaks to the barn at the Gale Farm. The following morning should have started with some kinky fun, but instead his life is turned upside down when a green tornado appears and takes Theo’s barn to another world.

With only his gray horse, Toto, as a companion Theo arrives in Oz. As he tries to make heads or tails out of this strange new world, he ends up liberating various villages from the tyranny of first, the Wicked Warlock of the East, who was killed accidentally when Theo’s barn dropped on top of him, and secondly, the Wicked Warlock of the West, Jadyn, who’d turned an entire village into toys, enslaved them, and was forcing them to brew potions.

It’s on the outskirts of Toy Village that Theo meets a damsel in distress, who is about to get ripped apart by crows. Her name is Anne Raggedy. She calls herself a Scarecrow, but Theo doesn’t find her very frightening, and actually ends up getting confused boners for the life-size doll. When Theo discovers that Anne used to be human, he decides to travel with her to the Emerald City in order to find a way to break her curse, so he can get laid. Joining them on their quest is a Cowardly Lioness and Cyborg Assassin named Tina Woodcutter.

This is another super fun genderbent fairytale retelling by Kamen. It’s the second one I’ve listened too and I’m quickly becoming addicted. The reason I enjoy these books so much is that they are not just straight retellings. They are not even just retellings where the genders are swapped. They are very uniquely done. Kamen does not only put her own twist on the story she also intertwines elements of other tales into the main story which makes it so much more interesting.
This story is a retelling of the Wizard of Oz with a male main character. He picks up 3 female sidekicks as he makes his way to the Emerald City. While the sidekicks are your classic three from the original story they are different in many ways. The scarecrow is not a scarecrow but a raggedy Anne doll, the lion is a genetically altered hybrid and so on. These differences go for all the characters and places within Oz. It sounds outrageous at first but works well within the book. This book had more sex in it that the previous book I listened too by Kamen but it went with the MC’s character traits and personality. It was worked it to fit with the story. The scenes were also tastefully done. I didn’t mind it.
The narrator for the audiobook does well but could perform with a bit more enthusiasm. Also, when a chapter ends I don’t see why it needs to be said that the story continues in the next chapter. I think that’s an obvious conclusion the reader or listener would come to. It doesn’t need to be announced each time. Those are really my only criticisms.
I’m always entertained by these stories and look forward to listening to more of them.

I received an Audible code from the author via Audiobook Obsession for an honest review. What follows is that review. There was no compensation for what is about to be said.

Okay. This is not my first KuroKoneko Kamen genderbent fairytale and it's definitely not going to be my last. This is by far the better of the two I've read and I can't wait for the sequel. I'm not joking around.

There is a fine line when you put in pop culture references into your fiction. On one hand, you can inspire the giggles and nostalgia feels. On the other, you can end up dating your book once it hits a certain age. Theodore Gale in Oz straddles that line like Theodore straddles his horse, Toto.

There were great one-liners, awesome pop references, and I found myself rooting for the main characters. Close to the end of the book, my Bug was getting into the story. He doesn't like me listening to audiobooks in the car, but this kid wasn't leaving the car until I turned it off. Because, and I quote, "I want to hear this."

Note. There are sex scenes. I do not advise listening to those scenes with little ears around and I personally didn't do that.

The writing is well done and pulls the reader in. It is a well-made retelling, following most of the original story, but being its own narrative at the same time. And I have to add that there is definitely a sequel! Which, I'm going to be listening to.

My only complaint is that sometimes the narrator read with an accent and other times not. It did on occasion turn me off of the story, but I was able to jump right back in a few seconds later.

All in all, this is a fun read, the laugh out loud and smile kind.

Final Rating: 4/5

Theodore Gale in Oz (Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 5) by KuroKoneko Kamen and narrated by L. A. Johnson is an entertaining, funny, adult take on several classic fairytales. I laughed many times with this one. Refreshing and recommended…if you are new to KuroKoneko Kamen, you should start with this book.

The publisher’s summary is right on, but if you need a bit more: humor (beware it sneaks up- at one point I almost choked on my drink because I wasn’t expecting it), good and bad characters, curses, friendships, romantic relationships develop, slaves, munchkins, Dr. Doppelganger, sex, swearing, monster races, magic, dire wolves, goblins, flying monkeys, hobgoblins, betrayal, and more!

Regarding the narrator: This was L. A. Johnson’s best narration of the books I’ve listened to so far. Either he’s getting better/more comfortable or I’m getting use to him. I still struggle with some of the voices (could just be me?).

Overall, I highly recommend this story, especially if you are like me and do not care for typical fairytales or prefer yours with adult themes. You can listen/read these books out of order without causing confusion as each story is unique.

Parental guidance/trigger warnings: This is an adult retelling. Sex, talk of erections/one night stands, swearing (throughout), ogling and like things of women by the main character (think of the main character as a hornball), and death.

*I was given a free review copy of the audiobook at my request and have voluntarily left this review. Thank you for allowing me to listen and review the book!

I received my copy of this from NetGalley because I accidentally clicked on the 'Read' button instead of the X in the corner of the browser.

That's ok. It wasn't a total loss; just a majority loss. The formatting of the file made the text almost unreadable on Kindle. All the apostrophes are quotation marks, and every time italics are used the space before the next word is dropped. One of the chapters has line breaks in all the wrong places. Made me wish the file was corrupted instead.

This is a fun book if you're into this sort of thing. It is also sure to make you stupider upon reading it. (I had to be careful here because I'm already so stupid that I don't know if I can afford to be even stupider. Or maybe I can't get any stupider!) Anyway, the author uses a sensationalist, more-is-more approach to style in nearly every sentence, and it doesn't always work. In fact, it rarely works. But so long as you're not offended by amateurish writing (and I most certainly am not!), then you'll adore wasting your time on this delicious trash. It's a fabulous fuckfest of stupidity. I'm glad I was here for it.

This book would have received a better rating from me, but I'll only give it two stars because every chapter ends with "to be continued in chapter [next chapter number]..." I'm sorry but that's the stupidest thing I've ever read and I've read both of Ulillillia's books.

Theodore Gale in Oz
Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 5

By: KuroKoneko Kamen
Narrated by: L. A. Johnson
Series: Genderbent Fairytales Collection, Book 5
Length: 8 hrs and 26 mins

I listened to this book at 1.50 X

FYI. This book is Part 1 to "read before Wicked Warlock of Oz." THIS IS ADULT FAIRTALES..NOT FOR UNDER 18.

If you like the t.v. Series "Once upon a time" adult fairtales you'll love this series.

It doesn't stick to one Fairytale line, it mixs different tales together.

Remember it's Genderbent so you have Theo the playboy cowboy, instead of Dorothy and ofcourse he is joined by 3 females a doll (scarecrow) a cyborg (tin man) ect.( all kind of horny) and then you can't forget Toto his horse.. Its kind of cool.

Very enjoyable listen.

And L.A. Johnson does a great job bring the story to life.

This twisted fairytale follows the original so closely, that it is truly enjoyable to compare them as you read along. Theodore is one fine cowboy. I truly enjoyed how Ann and Leo fought over him throughout the story. There were some very hot scenes that could melt a Kindle. My favorite part had to be Leo's kidnapping and rescue. I really enjoyed this twist of Wizard of Oz and would love to read more by Mr. Kamen.

This is the first narration I heard by L.A. Johnson. The narration really enhanced the story. It was easy to follow and fun to listen. L.A. Johnson brought all the characters to life. Each character had a unique voice which truly brought out the characters attributes. I am looking forward to hearing more from this narrator.

I’ll get you my pretty and your little dog too! Eh Horse I mean.

As Toto is a horse and Dorothy Gale is Theodore Gale. The Scarecrow is Anne Raggedy, the Lion is Leonora and she is a demihuman part Lion Part Human, the Tin Man is a Cyborg and there is a Wicked Warlock of the West.

I loved this retelling of the Wizard of Oz. Having read Alister in Wonderland I knew it would be a genderbending retelling of the Fairtyale but the characters are plucky and funny and whilst its not a bonkbuster there is a good bit of sex in it.

I enjoyed this I am going to read some of the authors other works, and I am going to finally get around to reading the Wizard of Oz.

This is the first twisted classic fairytale that I have read. It's my normal cup of tea, but I was hooked. This will not be my last. Between goblins to walking talking formerly humans now toys to the demi-humans.
I was not sure what to expect as I read this book, but I loved it! It is a page turner for sure with enough of it's own story to not be "another remake." I was entertained reading Theo's adventures in Oz. It definitely has similarities to the Wizard of Oz, but it is it's own book. If you are a fan of the Wizard of Oz, then read this book! Keep up the good work!
Warning: There are adult scenes and scenarios.

First off I have to say I love how the author takes a fairy tale and puts a twist to the story . That will have you loving the story and laughing your head off .
This is a retelling of Alice in wonderland but a male being the main lead . Instead of witches there are warlocks . Yes there is a hurricane that does havoc on Theodore Gale life. . Theodore Is a 26 yr old playboy that has time on his hands since he doesn’t work .
How does Theodore go back home. Grab it and see

L.A The Narrator is great. Love how he has done this whole series . His voice is smooth and steady .

I listened to the audio.

Quirky, funny with hot sex scenes. I enjoy listening to KuroKoneko's genderbent retelling of fairy tales. This one is a retell of The Wizard of Oz. I enjoyed listening to Theodore's journey. I like how the character of scarecrow was raggedy Ann. Wonderful twist to the story.

This particular retelling of the Wizard of Oz keeps twisting as Theodore travels toward the Emerald City. I like how the author has added elements that make the story as much steampunk as fairy tale, but I wish Theodore was a little more than a caricature of a redneck hillbilly.

Another great version of a fairytale with the genders switched. I am really liking these versions as they follow the original to a degree, but are totally unique at the same time. This book can be read as a stand-alone with no issues.

I love a good fractured fairy tale, so I thought this would be an interesting book to read.

Sometimes it's nice to read a fluffy-fast read book, unfortunately this was just not good.
I did not enjoy the writing, the story, the ending. It was painful.

Not a fan.
