The idea of time travel is very alluring indeed. Claire visits Scotland, and lands in a setting two hundred years before her time. The book has a good start, Claire with her husband Frank who is a history professor. Owing to him, Claire has a good knowledge of history; Frank is enthusiastically involved in finding more about his ancestors. The book holds your enthusiasm as Claire enters the 18th century Scotland. The pages describing how she takes her time to come to a conclusion that she has time travelled are gripping. As the Scots and the English suspect her of being a spy, she has no alternative but to marry Jamie Fraser to save herself. The rest of the book is about the torture techniques used in the 18th century, the fights and the escapades, loads of lovemaking between Jamie and Claire. She does reveal her identity to Jamie; the story is about how she makes a decision whether to go back or to stay in this time travel. There are many gory incidents in the book, like the witch trials, which gives you goosebumps. However the other incidents with elaborate description of torture, were not particularly to my taste.
Claire's fight with her conscience in the later half, the confessions etc. are written far at the very end of the novel, when she has a already made her decision in the beginning itself.
I was waiting to read something about Frank, his perspective, what does he think about Claire's disappearance but Frank's character is not developed at all. Maybe it will be in the other books in the series.
If you are a fan of many love scenes and gory torture, you should read the book, otherwise just go watch the series...

A clear fan of the series. Indepth research and accuracy of historic details. A great mix of history, adventure, and romance. I highly recommend.

This book really hit home for me. The subtle but powerful metaphors of faulty love really made me reflect on my own marriage. Sitting down in my recliner with this book in my left hand while my belovéd sat across from me in her favourite chair... everything spoke to me at once. The book's alluring take on life's purposes and values one should put forth made my mind turn. I had had it. I left my wife shortly after finishing the second book of this series as I simply had to be out there in the universe and she was hindering my ability to do so. I loved you Shayleen but my lust for life goes way beyond what I could ever feel for a person.

I will never forgive you, Diana Gabaldon, for ruining my marriage, but in turn, you opened my eyes to the spectacles of the world - none of which, were my wife.

I am re-reading all the Outlander novels in anticipation of the hopefully soon-to-be-published Go Tell the Bees. Super, fast moving romantic adventure but I am once again annoyed with Diana Gabaldon's belief that you can nip across 'the channel' from Inverness to Le Havre in a matter of hours. Not possible Diana.
